Objective of the Project |
Recent findings of both Czech teams behind this project showed that yeast colonies can serve as a unique model system, where colonies behave as simple multicellular organisms formed by differentiated cells with specific properties. Intriguingly, one of the major colonial cell subpopulations gains metabolic properties similar to tumor cells. Natural yeast strains form another type of colonies that resembles fungal biofilms with specific properties which contribute to the high environmental resistance of the entire colony population. With the application of next-generation sequencing methodology provided by the Norwegian team to this model, project YEASTSEQ will contribute to uncovering of molecular mechanisms regulating colony differentiation and the knowledge gleaned will find applications in medicine. |
