Objective of the Project |
The overall objective of this proposal is to help to alleviate the dual problem facing transplantation medicine, of shortage of donor tissues, and the relatively short storage time. We will develop novel, improved protocols for preparation of corneal (endothelial and epithelial) and conjunctival (epithelial and goblet) cells for potential grafting in human medicine. Throughout, we will monitor the viability of cells and tissues using established tests for DNA integrity and DNA repair capability. Vitrification will be introduced as a potential method for indefinite storage of cells/tissue for grafting. |
