Objective of the Project

The project will be implemented by the Institute of Mother and Child Care (IMCC), which has been taken for many years as one of the best quality medical facilities in the field of perinatal medicine, mainly due to its specialism and emphasis on the medical expertise of its staff. The main focus of the project is to provide secondary and tertiary prevention services by follow-up dispensary care at the perinatal centre. The submitted project subject matter is primarily the purchase of specialized devices that allows examination of a range of organ systems in high risk newborns (the central nervous system, circulatory system, uropoetic and gastrointestinal systems). This will create the conditions for optimal and adequate outpatient care in newborns with very low and extremely low birth weight and in newborns, who, after the birth, had to undergo resuscitation-intensive care due to other causes (the infection, perinatal asphyxia, intrauterine growth restriction, multiple pregnancy and presence of congenital defects). An integral part of the project is the education of medical staff in long-term monitoring of high-risk newborns, namely it will be the training in Bayley Scales of Infant Development. This activity will help improve the overall prediction of risk infants, improve conditions for the early diagnosis of psychomotor and mental development disorders. The project will include an implementation of the preventive dispensary care programme. Particularly, the hearing screening and the sense testing will be introduced, the algorithm for long-term monitoring of high-risk newborns will be created and the new options of ultrasonographic examination in the post-neonatal period will be used (sonographic examination of the central nervous system, functional echocardiography, investigations of the urinary tract and the digestive tract). For infants at high risk for developmental disabilities in motor, mental and sensory areas, the ICMS starts the ultrasonographic diagnosis and subsequent therapeutic measures whenever necessary. During the first year the patient purposively undergoes at least two to three times the sonographic examination. Currently, the outpatient care for high-risk newborns is provided inadequately in terms of material and technology. The specialized outpatient unit has not available the up-to date ultrasonographic devices and so it is not able to perform all the necessary specialized examinations. To be able to provide the relevant patients with the best available methods of diagnosis and treatment, the applicant needs to procure up-to-date diagnostic devices for the outpatient units focusing on dispensary activities at its specialized Perinatal Centre.
