Project description:
The subject of this project will be the building of a new memorial to the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti at Lety, a memorial of international significance that will connect the existing Lety Cultural Heritage Memorial with the site of the former camp and thereby will create a comprehensive concept for the dignified honoring of the Holocaust and its Romani victims.
The Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti represents one of the most thoroughly-achieved attempts at the genocide of the European Roma and Sinti. This project will address the current state of the Lety Cultural Heritage Memorial that is so inconvenient for visitors to use. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the industrial pig farm that was built during the 1970s on part of the territory of the former camp and in its environs. The existing form of the Lety Cultural Heritage Memorial is not such as to present a comprehensive concept for the dignified honoring of the Holocaust and its Romani victims.
Building a new Lety memorial to the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti will constitute the revitalization of the existing Cultural Heritage Memorial and its expansion to include a new area and new visitors’ center, including facilities for visitors. An permanent exhibitions will be built on the grounds of the newly- created memorial. Other components of the project will be educational activities for adults, children and youth, the development of a mobile phone application, an international academic conference and the production of interesting cultural events at the new memorial. The project will be implemented in partnership with The Falstad Centre of Norway, which has experience with arranging similar exhibitions and educational programs. This partner of the project will be directly involved in designing the educational activities and mobile phone application. Through the international academic conference, the partner will have an opportunity to present itself and its own work. Other partners of the project will be the municipality of Lety and the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
