Objective of the Project |
The objective is to preserve and open the non-movable cultural landmark, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Konojedy in the Úštěk district, including the movable cultural heritage located inside the church. The church is registered on the Central List of Czech Cultural Monuments and has been closed to the public since August 2012 based on the recommendation of a structural engineer. The preservation of the church involves its comprehensive restoration, including structural repairs, the repair of facades, including the restoration of windows, the restoration of the interior, including doors and existing furnishings, repair of the roof construction and the replacement of the roof covering above the sacristy, the restoration of the floor on the 1st floor of the sacristy, relaying the existing roof covering above the nave and chancel, including the treatment of the roof construction against wood-eating pests. In addition to construction and restoration measures, the project also includes a plan to present the landmark building as part of Czech cultural and historical heritage. The church has suffered major structural damage and is therefore closed to the public; the interior of the church has been devastated and looted. The project contributes to the fulfilment of the comprehensive approach to monument restoration and combines the restoration of non-movable and movable valuables while also resolving the secure treatment of movable assets (seven altars, pulpits and oak pews). Another benefit consists in the added value of the project in the form of increasing professional qualification: students from J. E. Purkyně University (a project partner) will be involved in the project’s professional activities. The project also contributes to the stimulation and intensification of interdisciplinary cooperation; experts from a variety of fields will contribute to preparation and implementation, and only thanks to this cooperation is it possible to conduct work of this scope and importance. The project will involve bilateral activity with an additional Norwegian partner in the form of cooperation on the preparation and distribution of a popular science publication/anthology, thus expanding and intensifying existing cooperation between the Czech non-profit sector and the Norwegian public sector. The project will also help strengthen the mutual understanding and integration of the majority group of citizens and the Roma minority, as another project goal is to utilize the renovated monument as a place for hosting cultural and social activities. With the involvement of a third partner, the Foundation for Holocaust Victims in cooperation with the Museum of Roma Culture, the monument will be used to present Roma art with the goal of fostering mutual understanding between all groups of citizens. |
